Last weekend, I had the opportunity do do a BIG family shoot at Skyline Medical Center with a very special family. I went to Ft. Campbell High with 2 of these gals and was honored that they asked me to do this. Their Dad has been very ill, and it was important to them that they have family portraits done. As is always the way, hospital lighting is SO flattering (not!) but we made do. Luckily, the hospital had a pretty courtyard so we were able to utilize that for the family sessions with the exception of their Dad who isn't able to go outside these days. We had quite a bit of fun with these and all of the kids did a great job! Here's to family and 2012 being a blessed year for everyone.

Little boys just don't consider family portraits to be very high on their priority list. I wonder why? I mean, you have some stranger with their camera in your face trying to make you smile while EVERYONE is looking at you. No pressure right? Plus, sitting still for a camera when there are rocks and sticks to play with makes PERFECT sense. ;) These little guys did great for their age. Parents always seem to think their children do worse than other children during photo sessions ~ and I always tell them that for the most part, all little kids are the same when it comes to portraits! And I genuinely mean that. Here is a sneak peek of another great family session at Harlinsdale Park.

I have had the opportunity to work with so many great families this Fall! It really has been a lot of fun. The thing that struck me the most about this family was how incredibly sweet these boys were! We were in the neighborhood of The Governor's Club, climbing up and down some pretty steep hills in order to get to some good spots to shoot. These boys helped me on every hill! Such little gentlemen ~ I was tickled to death! They are cuties anyway but how nice to see such manners. :)

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of photographing this awesome family at Harlinsdale Farm. I had never been there before ... which is amazing considering how many times I've been to the Factory in Franklin! This farm is directly across the street and it's free to look at, for photographers, and they have a dog park. There is a beautiful pond, a REALLY old farm house, barns, a silo, stables, decaying stone walls. A photographer's paradise! We had a lot of fun roaming the grounds and I'm super pleased with the results of this session!

I can honestly say that this is one of the nicest families I have ever worked with! This session made the 4th time that I have had the opportunity to work with them. :) It's fun to watch them grow! The twins are darling, as usual, and big sister is so good with them. Her face cracks me up in the kissing pictures! She thinks kissing is gross. ;) That certainly made for some cute candids!

I had such a treat last Saturday! One of my dearest friends from high school, Kristeena, surprised me by showing up at her younger sister's family photo session. Kris and I were as close as sisters as teenagers, and although we've both been in Nashville for years, our busy schedules and gaggle of kids has kept us from getting together. Luckily, her sister Jeanie hired me for a shoot and we finally got to see each other. Jeanie was just a little girl when we were in high school and it was so funny to see her all grown up and being a mom!

Seeing Kris ~ it was if no time had passed. We've talked on the phone and are both on Facebook, but getting to see her was so much better than all that! Anyway, here is a sneak peek from their session ...

20 years ago, I certainly had no idea that one day I'd be shooting senior portraits for one of my Ft. Campbell High friends. Tia and I were FCHS cheerleaders together, and great friends. We've been fortunate to have reconnected in recent years and I have really enjoyed getting to know her amazing kids! I told Miss Hannah to give me some sass when she was posing ~ she looked at me and said "I can't! I'm not sassy!" To which her boyfriend and I burst into laughter. Hannah has plenty of sass and a good head on her shoulders as well. She reminds me quite a bit of her mother at that age! She's a wonderful young woman, who I have no doubt, will go very far in life!

These boys were such troopers! They were very patient while we tried to get their cutie pie twin sisters to smile and/or look at the camera. I was really impressed! Not only that but they were very loving toward the babies, their parents, and each other. All in all it was a great session and I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to work with this family. I have now photographed three sets of identical twins ~ and I have another set coming up next week!

This session was, hands down, a total blast! They'd done their homework on what makes for cute engagement portraits. (And it didn't hurt that they're a DARLING couple anyway!). We made the most of what downtown Nashville has to offer ~ even on a super busy Sunday when it's hopping with tourists. These two are getting married in Boston so I will not have the honor of what I am sure will be a stunning wedding. But nonetheless, I had the honor of photographing their engagement session and I'm so glad I did!

There is just nothing like sweet little boys. This little guy is turning three, and even though portraits are not high on the list of priorities for three year old's, he was an absolute angel! Oakland's Mansion in Murfreesboro Tn. is such a beautiful place to celebrate a marriage. I was thrilled to play a role in documenting the union of these two wonderful people! I had the honor of photographing their engagement session last Spring. The bride also had a bridal session this summer, and I am now able to post her beautiful portraits! BUT ... I am too excited about posting their wedding portraits so the bridal session is just going to have to wait for right now! I, of course, cried at this wedding just as I do every wedding. I'm a sap, what can I say. :) This time, it was the groom ~ moved to absolute tears at his bride's entrance through the church doors and down the aisle. Here is a sneak peek of this truly special occasion ~ and as you can see, the wedding party and I definitely had some fun with the pictures!

I have really enjoyed the brides and grooms I have been working with! Maybe it's like this for all wedding photographers but everyone is more than well aware of the term BRIDEZILLA. My brides could not possibly be further from bridezillas! (Yay for me right?)

Anyway, I had the honor of shooting Dori and Jeremy's engagement session last winter, and as of last weekend, their gorgeous wedding as well. Dori was so beautiful! (And I must say, possibly the most laid back bride in the history of time. :) I always cry at weddings ~ and it's no different when I photograph them! This time, it was the Father/Daughter and the Mother/Son dances that got me. They were so sweet!

WOW!! I don't even know where to begin with this one! I suppose I could begin with the PERFECT weather. None of us could have asked for a more gorgeous day. Carnton Plantation is a fabulous place to get married. It's history, architecture, garden ... I could go on and on. If you are unfamiliar with it's history, I recommend you look it up. The book The Widow of the South was written about it. (And it happens to be one of my favorites!)

The bride and groom were so much fun to work with and I think it definitely shows in their portraits! I must say that I cried when Joanna said her vows ~ and had to quickly compose myself so as to not miss an important photographic moment!

This is just a sneak peek. (I know, I know. Sneak peeks to not usually include this many portraits. But I took over 2000 pictures so I'd say that I'm not even half of the way to completing this event.)

A few months ago, I received an email from a mom-to-be inquiring about my 3-6-9 infant portrait package. She decided to go with me, and since then has added a newborn session and a maternity session. I was so tickled when I received her check for the infant package in the mail! As she told her hubby that she'd picked the photographer, he said "Wait! You should go with Anne Jordan. I went to high school with her." Her response? "Um, that's who I picked!" She'd found me online, having no earthly idea that her husband knew me! How cool is that? Definitely meant to be. We had a fun maternity session and I have to say that this about to be mommy is certainly glowing! I'm really looking forward to meeting their precious baby girl in a couple of months!

I love, love, love maternity shoots! It's such a special time and all involved are eagerly anticipating a brand new, sweet baby. It's nice for the mommies too. They get to feel pampered and pretty. :) This little family couldn't possibly have been more fun to work with! They also couldn't possibly be more in love. They were so sweet together ~ I actually got tears in my eyes at one point. I think their love for each other comes through in their portraits. I can't wait to see their handsome little man when he arrives!

Little Lights and Paper Hearts

I have been thinking about starting a blog for a couple of years. One that is about all things creative. From photography to all things handmade, to cooking, art, music, pop culture, etc. I enjoy writing and have a lot of creative friends, so I thought I'd do little features on their work.

Thank You For Your Service | Nashville Tn. Family Photographer

Several times during this shoot, men who were passing us by on the street, thanked the dad in this family for his service. He was in uniform during the first half of the session. I was really moved by the frequency with which this happened ~ and I'm so glad that people will pause to say "Thank you for your service." to a man in uniform! We all know that these days they've either been to the Middle East, have been there multiple times, or are going. For this family it's the second time, and I know it has got to be so hard on them, especially with two little kids. They deserve much thanks! I wanted to tell this story, hoping you'll feel how inspiring it was, and do the same the next time you pass a man in uniform on the street. I know that I will!

Summertime!

Well, the boys and I attended our first ever pig roast yesterday! The weather was perfect, the food was delicious, and we had some quality time with lifelong family friends. You can't ask for a much better day than that now can you? :) The boys were WORN OUT by the time we came home. (And so was Mom!) What a great day ~ and what a great memory we have to carry with us.

Hummingbirds and Doll Babies

I can honestly say that I had the best grandmother any girl could ever wish for. Grandmommy was a loving, maternal, graceful, feminine, quick witted woman who I admired so much. As a little girl, I was always mesmerized by her hummingbird feeder, the smell of her perfume, and the little treats we encountered at her house. Frosted Flakes with whole milk, fritos, tiny orange juice glasses, coffee ice cream, her quirky siamese cats, her daily afternoon "nap" that really was quiet time to watch her soaps in her bedroom ... the list goes on and on. Grandmommy was always very sweet in allowing me to look through her jewelry ~ treasures to me, and her pictures. She gave me my first perfume. (In a little roll-on tube that reminded me of lip gloss ~ it was NOT lip gloss, although I did try it out in that manner only to sting my lips!)

Every Halloween, Thanksgiving, Valentine's Day, Saint Patrick's Day, and Easter we received a card appropriate for the particular holiday. Enclosed was a crisp $1 bill. It was something special that she did for us ... and I'd venture to say that it meant so much to each and every one of us.

Grandmommy was a devout Catholic. She gave me my first (and only) rosary. A pretty crystal one that stays in, and sometimes on, my bedside table. That rosary has accompanied me to and through some of the difficult things I have been through in recent years. It brings me comfort on many levels. I wonder, when Grandmommy purchased this rosary for me, if she had any idea that her grandaughter would hold that rosary in times of strife, at almost 40 years old?

When I was a young adult, Grandmommy and I sat on her sofa together one night and talked. This particular memory is one that will stand out forever in my mind and heart. She told me about having had breast cancer. I can remember being amazed that she'd survived what she had. Little did I know what was in my future.

Before dementia took my Grandmother's memory, she and I talked on the phone at a minimum of twice a week. It was always such a joy to talk to her. I'd pick her brain about the old days. She was so animated the day that she told me about meeting my handsome Paw Paw. They'd met at a hop. (Yes, a hop. Doesn't that make you smile?) Grandmommy told me that Paw Paw was the most handsome man she had ever seen. (And he was.) A girl spilled punch on Grandmommy's dress that night. She told me that Paw Paw took her home to change and he asked her if she'd like to go on a date with him in the future. I said "Well Grandmommy, what did you say?" She laughed and said "Well I said yes OF COURSE!"

I said goodbye to my Grandmother last December, while in Texas for Paw Paw's funeral. The light in her eyes was gone. I showed her pictures of my children on my phone, and I showed her a picture of her with Paw Paw when they were young. She smiled, but I don't know if she recognized anything. I knew when I said goodbye to her, it would be the last time. I took her face in my hands and leaned down very close to her. Looking into her eyes, trying to make sure I reached her, I said "Grandmommy, I want you to know that I love you very much." Grandmommy replied with a smile and said "And you are a good girl." Then I gave her a kiss and walked away, sobbing.

As my Grandparents began to lose their memories, I delved into our family geneology, took the old home movies of Grandmommy and Paw Paw and their children and had them put on DVD, set to era appropriate music in order to preserve them for what I hope is forever, and copied photos from Grandmommy's house. These photographs are framed and scattered throughout my house. I've put together a photo collage of some of them. I chose that shade of pink as the background because it reminds me of her. The picture of her as a 4 year old in a hula skirt is one that she mailed to me. She told me that she knew I'd like that one. And of course, it is my favorite.

Autism Mothers ~ We Will Win!

I couldn't get through this video without crying. It was posted on an Autism site on Facebook, so I'm not certain that the link will work for everyone, but I hope that it does.

I particularly like the pictures of the moms wearing boxing gloves and posing James Bond style.

Mother's of children with Autism do have to fight for their children. The first two years after Sam's diagnosis were, so far, the toughest. But because of all of the subsequent help he's received, and his hard work, he's doing incredibly well!

One thing that I think some people fail to realize, is that it's much more difficult for children with Autism and other disabilities to learn some basic things that other children learn naturally. It's difficult and, at times, impossible for them. So as their mothers we have to work harder than the average, every day mom to teach them things as simple as eating normally, potty training, communicating, and social norms ~ or something somewhat close to them. The bright side is that every ounce of progress is SO rewarding, and the pride we feel in our children is gigantic. So, the comradery you feel amongst these women in this video is very real. Commonly bound together with the same worries, battles, triumphs, successes, and heartaches.

I see progress in Sam every single day. He never ceases to amaze me. I sure do love my handsome, sweet boy! I am so proud of him!

One of the best things about summer is having the time to make memories, and get together with family and friends. I'm fortunate to have friends in my life who consider me and my boys to be exended family. That is part of what makes Tennessee home for us. I'm looking forward to seeing what the rest of this summer holds in store ... swimming, grilling out, and quality time with loved ones! Here are some pictures of our summer fun so far ...

The Future Looks Bright! | Clarksville Senior Portrait Photographer

Ah Youth! Here is one of my latest senior portrait shoots ~ I really earned this one! Blistering heat, and crossing creeks! I now have a really pretty location in Clarksville for future shoots, with wildflower fields and a gorgeous creek! I can't help but think of what these seniors are about to encounter. Preparing for college, major life changes, and growing into adulthood. I always enjoy seeing the doting, caring parents preparing their kids for everything their senior year requires and, at times, the rolling of the eyes with exasperation from the teens. (I'm not saying this one did ~ I'm just saying that it never fails. ;) I particularly enjoy seeing the parents take it all in stride, knowing their baby is growing up, and treasuring the moments. Even the exasperating moments. :)

Phew! What a weekend! I had four shoots on Saturday in some seriously blistering heat. It was well worth it for everyone involved, and I had the honor of photographing one of my oldest friends and her precious family. It doesn't matter how many years pass you by when it comes to lifelong friendships. The only differences are that we're older (by TWENTY FOUR YEARS!), and we have a gaggle of offspring to enjoy! :) And what cuties they are!

Tennessee Renaissance Festival Fun!

EVERY year in May, I am begged and pleaded with to take the boys to the Renaissance Festival. Years ago, when Sam was a baby, we went ~ and encountered a muddy, crowded sea of (ahem) interesting people. One thing or another (life!) has prevented us from going again until today. And boy did I have two excited boys! It was crowded, yes, but it was not muddy! Yay for NO MUD! However, the cicadas were louder than the music and behaved as if they were dive bombers. Ah the cicada invasions of Nashville ... Anyway, the boys had a wonderful time. They rode some primitive rides, gazed longingly at primitive weapons, rode a camel (which really doesn't strike me as medieval but that's ok), saw the biggest hawk and owl on the face of the earth, and eventually volunteered to go home because they were happily exhausted. I'd say that the venture was quite the success and even though they've waited for years to go "back in time", it was worth the wait.

Here is a cute video of them riding one of the rides. There is one child whooping and giggling ... and he belongs to me. :)

I had so much fun shooting this engagement session. I find couples who are about to marry each other to be so inspiring.
